Ceric Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) is the inorganic compound with the formula (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6. This orange-red, water-soluble cerium salt is widely used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis and as a standard oxidant in quantitative analysis.
The anion [Ce(NO3)6]2− is generated by dissolving Ce2O3 in hot concentrated HNO3. This salt consists of the anion [Ce(NO3)6]2− and a pair of NH4+ counter ions. The ammonium ions are not involved in the oxidizing reactions of this salt. In the anion each nitrato group is chelated to the cerium atom in a bidentate manner.
Cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate ((NH4)2Ce(NO3)6) is a one-electron oxidizing agent that is used for oxidative addition reactions of electrophilic radicals to alkenes, enabling intermolecular and intramolecular carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation. CAN also oxidizes secondary alcohols into ketones and benzylic alcohols into aldehydes.
Cerium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN), is the important material for making Chrome etchant which is a very important micro electronic circuit corroding materials for LCD; CAN is also applied in specialty glass and catalyst.
